Flowers for Your Fall Wedding

We’re 6 months out from September, which means… Let the fall wedding prep begin!

Fall weddings have a special warmth about them, especially if you’re from somewhere that experiences the four seasons. But for couples who are more familiar with spring or summer weddings, a lot of questions can come up during the planning process: what colors should we choose, where should we take portraits, and what flowers will be in season?

We teamed up with one of our vendors to hear her expertise on how to plan your florals around the autumn months (September to November), and why she loves fall weddings so much!

Special thanks to Aja for contributing to this blog post! More on her below…

Q. Why do you love fall weddings?

“Fall weddings are fun to flower and wonderful to attend as a guest. The intensely deep colors of the natural landscape paired with the generally gorgeous climate make any artificial decor totally unnecessary. The potential for variety in your wedding flower color palette is endless!  Everyone knows the autumn months carry an indescribable feeling, marking a gentle and tranquil transition from one extreme season to another—but the floral colors of this season are anything but gentle!”

Q. What are your top floral recommendations for the fall?

“The perfect flowers for fall are…

  • Dahlias
  • Marigolds
  • Garden Roses (in shades of intense pink, coral, and red)
  • Snap Dragons
  • Sunflowers
  • Orange Ranunculus

These bright colors play off the variety of colors found in the natural foliage. Alongside the flowers, foraged greenery and dried grasses add interest and texture to produce bouquets that are a bit more wild and creative.”

Q. What’s a flower perfect for fall you wish more brides picked for their florals?

“Dark purple and red anemones are flowers I wish more brides would use in their bridal party’s bouquets. Brides generally use white anemone in their bouquet, but the other intense shades this beautiful flower offers really pop and add a unique texture to bouquets.”

Q. What has your favorite fall bouquet consisted of? Why was it your favorite?

“My favorite fall bouquet consisted of…

  • Purple Anemone
  • Marigolds
  • Orange Ranunculus
  • Dark Pink Garden Roses

It was a show stopper! This bouquet turned out so great because the bride told me she wanted ‘fall colors’ and then gave me permission to use my judgement. This is a florist’s dream!”

Q. Do you have any additional tips, tricks, or advice when it comes to picking your florist or your wedding flowers?

“If brides are willing to use color in their wedding, I highly suggest allowing the florist to have some freedom in designing bouquets that stand out. This will also allow florists to make use of natural foraged goods and local blooms, which will stretch the bride’s budget. If a bride does not feel confident using the bold colors of fall, a more muted palette of darker burgundies, purples, browns, and burnt rust can still honor the hues of the season without feeling too bright.”

Happy wedding planning!

Aja Maria Floral Preservation is a Catholic preservation company based in Pennsylvania and serving couples nationwide. Aja began preserving flowers in 2017 after she made a small wreath out of her own wedding bouquet. She’s passionate for helping couples commemorate their wedding day by capturing and preserving the essence of each beautiful bloom. “Within the Church, flowers are directly above the altar among the sacred images … in order to direct attention to God and Heaven. Within the home, I hope my artwork serves as both a reminder of the wedding day as well as the duty of the bride and groom to glorify God through incorporating beauty into everyday life.”
