Wedding planning is a lot.

From the moment you say, “Yes!” you will be flooded with decisions to make. I know when I was planning my own wedding, it felt like a race to the finish line; I was just hoping to find enough hours in the day to get everything done. There were so many ideas to keep track of, so many opinions that I wanted to take into consideration — food, color schemes, decor, parties, guest lists, budgets…

And that wasn’t even counting the most important part of the day: our wedding.

I searched high and low but wasn’t able to find a physical book to help me set aside all of the (ultimately) insignificant details and focus on the Sacrament. It was easy to lose sight of the whole point of all of this: a lifelong relationship with my husband that (God willing!) leads to Heaven.

I’ve always had a deep love of marriage and the Church. When I started planning my own wedding, I was most excited for the readings — there are so many beautiful options, and I was looking forward to teaching our guests more about who we are as a couple through our wedding Mass.

I am inspired by marriage. I know that sounds cheesy, but I’ve always loved marriage. As a culture and, frankly, as a Church, we don’t give enough attention to marriage. The secular world focuses on the big beautiful wedding day with the princess-like bride (usually described as “her” special day rather than “their” special day), and the Church puts so much emphasis on vocations to the religious life that marriage as a vocation can get lost in the shuffle. I think one of the most profound things we can do as a Catholic community to help our Church and help our world is to give proper attention to marriage. Faithful, lifelong, loving marriages would lead to more babies with examples of authentic Catholic love which would impact everything from the priest shortage to the way the we interact with the rest of the world.
